Read the Word:
Numbers 20:1-13
Meditate on the Word:
There can be no doubt that Moses was frustrated with the people he was tasked with leading. They were always needing something. They were always ready to argue that they should have stayed in Egypt. They were quick to blame Moses every time that they did not have bread, or meat, or water. Right on the heels of burying his sister, the people come to Moses complaining again. It is easy to see why he got angry with them and reacted the way he did.
Striking the rock instead of speaking to the rock may seem like a small thing to us. It’s doubtful that Moses harmed the rock. But what Moses did was a big deal to God. Such a big deal that Moses was prevented from going into the promised land. Why? Because Moses failed to demonstrate God’s holiness to the people. In that moment, instead of simply doing what God commanded him, Moses struck the rock. Twice. It was more important to Moses in that moment to demonstrate his anger to the people than show the power of God.
We live in a very angry time. Everyone has a public platform for displaying their anger. There are even some now who are famous simply for being angry all the time. Christian, we can do better. We do not have a duty to destroy people. We have a duty to demonstrate God’s holiness to them. Can we just do that?
Pray the Word:
Ask the Lord to reveal to you any areas of your life where you prioritize anger over His holiness. Repent of these.
