Read the Word:
Proverbs 14:1-9
Meditate on the Word:
In this brief passage, a foolish man is presented in contrast to one who is perceptive, sensible, and upright. A fool then must be the opposite of these three positive characteristics. A fool then, would be one who mocks and cannot find wisdom (v. 6). He would be one who boasts (v. 3) and is destructive (v. 1). Let us be careful to point out that foolish is not synonomous with uneducated. A foolish person is one whose character is primarily selfish and does not care about others or the Lord. A fool refuses to learn and lives in opposition to what he has been taught. He is the author of his own destruction.
A sensible person pays attention to God and lives to please Him. An upright person, one of integrity, is not primarily concerned about himself and his own pleasures. A perceptive person avoids the mocker, who is troublesome. Because he perceives the voice of God, mocking and temptations sound foreign to him. Things that are not of God seem really wrong to him. This is not because of education, but because of his concern for God and for others.
Pray the Word:
Take some time to quietly listen for what the Lord reveals to you today.
