Read the Word:
John 13:1-17
Meditate on the Word:
In any proper earthly kingdom, the king would never wash the feet of his subjects. Earthly kingdoms are about power and authority–acquiring them, using them, abusing them. In an earthly kingdom, the subjects, even those in the highest positions of authority, are there to serve the king and his wishes. They are not there to be served by the king. This act of Jesus–washing the feet of his disciples–was scandalous. He was doing the job of the lowest servant. In doing so, He was making a visual statement about just how different His Kingdom is.
Certainly, there was one present who was there for the money and power. Judas Iscariot did not care about serving others. He didn’t even care about serving his King. Judas was interested in what he could gain by proximity to the King. People like this do not remain long in Christ’s company.
In washing the feet of his disciples, Jesus showed us the lengths we are to go to in order to serve each other. Our Lord has not asked us to do anything that He is unwilling to do. In fact, He already did it. We do not serve our Lord by seeking power and influence. We serve Him by taking up our cross, following Him, and serving others.
Pray the Word:
If you have been seeking power and influence instead of service, confess this to the Lord and repent.
