Read the Word:
Matthew 23:23-28
Meditate on the Word:
We often see Jesus speaking against religious hypocrites. The Greek word for hypocrite originally referred to an actor on a stage. A hypocrite is one who puts on a performance. Jesus knows that the hearts of these religious leaders does not match their actions. This is why he compares them to whitewashed tombs; they look really good on the outside, but inside are dead.
Many people can put on a religious performance. They know the right things to say and do, but inside, they are dead. They will make a show of their religiosity, but then go home and fill their minds and hearts with filth. They will teach Sunday School, then go home and despise their families. They will sing songs of praise on Sunday, then on Monday scheme to cheat on business dealings. One does not have to be a religious leader to be a hypocrite. One only has to “act” Christian without allowing Christ to change their heart. Are we guilty of this?
Pray the Word:
Ask our Lord to reveal any areas of hypocrisy in your life. Repent of them.
