Read the Word:
Matthew 15:1-9
Meditate on the Word:
God had made several provisions in the law for His people to care for each other. And it was just expected that people would care for their aging parents. This was part of honoring them. The parent-child relationship does not end at 18 or 21, but shifts over time. And when parents are old, feeble, and living on a fixed income, their children are to care for them. This is a part of how God has ordered society.
The religious leaders came up with a holy-sounding bypass. Someone could say that their money was dedicated to God, and get our of their responsibility to their family. Certainly, this was never God’s plan. He expects children to care for their parents and other family members who are in need. God has always expected His people to care for each other. It was structured into covenant life for Israel, it is structured into family life, and it is structured into His design for the church.
Pray the Word:
Ask our Lord if you are caring for others in the way He would have you to do so. If not, repent and do better.
