Read the Word:
Leviticus 19:9-18
Meditate on the Word:
How we treat our neighbor is a direct reflection of our reverence (or lack thereof) for God. This section of the Law was written to discourage selfish accumulation at the expense of the poor. There was always to be something left at the end of the harvest for the poor to be able to gather and eat. Paid workers were to receive their fair wages every day so that they could feed their families that day. Not being dishonest or greedy is a bare minimum standard in treating other people.
The actual command is to “love your neighbor as yourself.” Love of neighbor prevents us from hoarding selfishly. Love of neighbor prevents us from cheating each other. Love of neighbor prevents us from bearing false witness against our neighbor. By the way, if that story you are sharing on social media is false, you are bearing false witness against your neighbor. The standard for love of neighbor is “as yourself.” Don’t do things to others that you would not want done to you. Period.
Pray the Word:
Ask our Lord to reveal any area of your life that violates this command. Repent.
