Read the Word:
1 Samuel 2:22-36
Meditate on the Word:
It is very easy in this narrative to see Hophni and Phineas as purely bad characters who have no redeeming qualities. That is on purpose. Their evil was being contrasted by Samuel’s good character. We cannot deny that what these two were doing was evil. They were treating God’s holiness with contempt and living for their own vices and pleasures. God will only allow people to treat Him with contempt for so long before He passes judgment. In the case of Hophni and Phineas, they would die on the same day.
It can also be easy to see this episode as a warning to religious leaders about claiming to be working for God while abusing His people, because it is. It is obvious from reading this passage that the general public knew these two were crooks masquerading as priests. But there is also a warning to people who are not clergy in this. As believers, we are all called to holy living as members of the body of Christ. But many treat this calling as secondary to their own sinful desires–if they even recognize the call at all. If we are not living lives of holiness, we are despising the sacrifice of Christ on the cross, an even greater sacrifice than that which Hophni and Phineas were treating inappropriately.
Let us be careful to heed God’s warnings and live our lives according to His will.
Pray the Word:
Ask our Lord to reveal any area of your life that you have not submitted to Him. Commit that area to Him today.
