Read the Word:
Psalm 119:121-128
Meditate on the Word:
Love of God is inextricably connected to love of His word. Particularly, it is connected to love of His commands. If we do not love God’s commands, we cannot truly claim to love Him fully. While the psalmist is looking for God’s rescue from his situation, he is still concerned with being fully obedient. In fact, he sees those two things as linked together. He even concludes this stanza with “I carefully follow all your precepts and hate every false way.” We cannot be on a path of disobedience and expect God’s continued protection in our rebellion.
Many today try just that. They claim to love God, and yet they look for loopholes in His commands. They look for ways to continue in disobedience to the God they claim to love. The ability to do this always relies on human “wisdom” instead of God’s wisdom. Only the depraved human heart can attempt to reconcile love of God with ignoring His will. It is interesting that the psalmist asks, “Teach me your statutes.” He recognizes that we cannot simply go to God’s word with our own human understanding. We need God’s help to do what pleases Him.
Pray the Word:
Join with the psalmist in praying, “I am Your servant; give me understanding so that I may know Your decrees.”
