Read the Word:
1 Samuel 9:1-14
Meditate on the Word:
After reading yesterday about Israel demanding a king for themselves, today we encounter their first human king. It seems almost comical how God arranged for the meeting of Saul and Samuel. Saul was looking for his father’s donkeys and was ready to give up when a servant suggested asking the man of God. Saul was doing a somewhat mundane (and probably irritating) task of trying to find the lost donkeys. God used this to bring him to his destiny.
What if Samuel had given up on finding his father’s donkeys? Of course, we know that being the king did not work out well for him because of his character. The same impatience that led him to want to abandon his search for the donkeys would lead him to be impatient and not wait as he was instructed in chapter 13, costing him his kingdom. Impatience is tricky like that. It can cost us family, friends, opportunity, or like Saul, God’s blessing. The lesson for us: Be steadfast and patient in what God has called you to, whether a mundane task or a time of waiting.
Pray the Word:
Ask our Lord to reveal any areas of impatience in your life. Commit to staying the course.
