Read the Word:
2 Samuel 9:1-13
Meditate on the Word:
David had often defied expectations. Nobody would have expected him to be anointed as king. Nobody would have expected him to slay a giant with a sling and a stone. Nobody would have expected him to leave Saul alive when Saul was actively trying to kill him. Nobody would have expected him to kill the messenger who claimed to kill Saul. Nobody would have expected him to grieve Saul the way he did. And given the customs of the time, nobody would have expected him to allow Jonathan’s son to live, let alone bring him to the palace and show kindness to him.
It was customary during those days to kill everyone who was of the lineage of a king in order to prevent him from having a legitimate claim to the throne. Mephibosheth, the grandson of Saul, was in that lineage. But, like his father Jonathan before him, he recognized David as the one that God had anointed for this purpose. And David, because of his great love of Jonathan, purposed to bless any of Saul’s family that he could find. David did not have to restore the family’s land. He definitely did not have to allow Saul’s grandson to dine at his table in perpetuity. Yet, he did.
We all love to be the recipients of unexpected kindness. Sometimes it is literally life-saving. Sometimes it is a meaningful gesture. But an unexpected kindness is always a good reminder of the unexpected kindness given to us by our God. Let us show that same unexpected kindness to someone today.
Pray the Word:
Ask the Lord, “Is there anyone that I can show the kindness of God to?” Then obey what He reveals to you.
