Read the Word:
Luke 7:31-35
Meditate on the Word:
We live in a very noisy time. Society has gotten progressively louder, more boisterous, and generally more profane than that of previous generations. Everyone now has access to make their voice heard to anyone who will listen to them. Thus, we have a cacaphony of voices shouting with almost nobody to listen to them. Everyone wants to be heard, but nobody wants to listen to what others are saying. The imagery of children shouting in the marketplace mentioned in this passage makes me think very much of this. It’s the sound of whining, criticism, and often just hatred. Jesus experienced this.
I find it amusing that He points out the contrasting criticisms that He and John the Baptist faced. There are still today voices from every direction telling us that if we are Christians, we should look and behave in certain ways. We are criticized if we listen to the wrong music or watch the wrong shows. We are also criticized if we are not engaged in the culture. There is criticism flying through the air everywhere and it is creating a culture of general anger and anxiety. This is not the way we are to live. Let us strive to live above the fray and keep an eternal perspective on the world around us.
Pray the Word:
Confess to our Lord any ways in which you’ve been affected by the cultural noise. Seek His peace today.
