Read the Word:
Ephesians 5:15-21
Meditate on the Word:
Have you ever walked through a bad neighborhood at night? Or maybe hiked an unknown path under less than ideal circumstances? When walking in an unfamiliar place, it is natural to keep alert and to look around you to take note of any dangers that may be present. These dangers may be suspicious people, wild animals, or even a hole in the path that would cause you to trip. We treat these areas as much different that walking in the familiarity of our own homes, where we know the feel of the floor, the arrangement of the furniture, and normally, any people or animals that are present. We are prone to be much less alert in familiar territory than in places we perceive as dangerous.
Here, Paul give the church at Ephesus, as well as us, a great reminder that the world is full of dangers. Things that will trip us up and cause us harm. This is why we must walk carefully in the world, aware of the dangers around us. Have you ever seen those stumbling out of a bar at closing time? Many of them stumble around and fall, trying to find their way, often completely oblivious to the danger around them. Unable to make rational decisions. We are cautioned to be of sober mind and aware of danger so that we do not fall into the trap that captures those around us. Let us commit to that awareness today.
Pray the Word:
Confess your reliance to God for wisdom as you walk through the dangers of this life.
