Read the Word:
Luke 11:29-32
Meditate on the Word:
One lesson that I have learned time and again, in ministry and in life, is that many people flat refuse to believe the truth when it confronts them. I have seen people refuse medical treatment because they insist that the doctor is lying about their condition. I have seen people refuse to believe the evil that a loved one is capable of, despite irrefutable evidence. I have also seen people refuse to see the truth about themselves, again, despite all evidence. Denial of the truth always seems to be rooted in selfish resistance to the challenge of our comfort. People deny Jesus for the same reason; He challenges their perspective of themselves and others.
When Jesus is noting that the people are demanding a sign, He fully understands that there is no sign that would convince these people that He is the Messiah. After all, they were not convinced by the virgin birth. They were not convinced by God Himself speaking from heaven at Jesus’ baptism. They were not convinced by His healing of the sick, or by His casting out of demons. They would go on to not be convinced by His resurrection from the grave. The reason is simple: If Jesus is really Lord, then we must change the way we live in response to that truth. Are we willing to change the way we live in response to the truth of who He is?
Pray the Word:
Ask our Lord to soften the heart of someone who needs to believe.
