Read the Word:
Luke 7:31-35
Meditate on the Word:
I find it somewhat amusing that Jesus referred to people in his day as being like children throwing accusations at each other. One could say that our current society is much like that. If social media is the contemporary town square, then its participants are like that crowd of children looking for anything which offends them. They are fueled by their offense; they gain their sense of moral superiority from it. Many today even market their outrage and profit greatly from it.
Those who wish to be offended do not rely on truth for their accusations. Look at the examples which Jesus gives. Perhaps no two preachers were ever more different that John the Baptist and Jesus. Yet, they both called people to repentance. But accusing men of being truthful doesn’t really fuel anger. But spreading lies does. John never had a demon. Jesus was not a drunk. These lies were designed to destroy their credibility. But ultimately, it was their proclaiming of the Kingdom and call to repentance that caused people to want them dead.
In the end, the truth is always revealed. So let us not look to be offended, particularly if one is speaking the truth. It is much better to heed God’s call to repentance and turn to Him.
Pray the Word:
Pray for wisdom for your pastor and anyone else who speaks the unpopular truth in this day.
