Read the Word: Matthew 21:18-22
Meditate on the Word:
As is often the case with eyewitness accounts, details may vary from witness to witness. We note that in Mark, the disciples saw the next day that the fig tree had withered. Matthew has it withering “at once.” Either way, the withering of the fig tree 1) did happen, and 2) happened very quickly. Either way, it was certainly the result of Jesus’ words.
Interestingly, both Matthew and Mark record Jesus’ response to the disciples. He said that with faith they could cast a mountain into the sea. Since that particular mountain is still in place today, it does not seem that the disciples actually did that. Of course, since much of our Lord’s teaching is parable, it seems most natural to accept this teaching as parable. While our Lord might not have us literally casting mountains into the sea, He certainly has given us the ability through faith to conquer the most insurmountable obstacles.
The disciples did a lot of impossible, through faith in Jesus. They saw countless people saved. They healed diseases and cast out demons. God is no less powerful today than He was then. Through faith, we too can face the biggest obstacles, knowing that our Lord will get us through them.
Pray the Word:
What is the obstacle in your life, and how is it interfering with you doing God’s will? Pray to the Lord in faith that this obstacle will be removed from you.
