Read the Word:
Mark 12:13-17
Meditate on the Word:
In this passage, Jesus speaks to something that is quite unpopular, which is respect for government. To the Jews, being ruled by Caesar was a temporary evil that they had to accept. They expected that when Messiah came, he would kick the Romans out. They did not want to be ruled by Rome, and certainly did not want to pay taxes to Rome. Yet, this was the government that God allowed to rule over them. Rome was not particularly friendly to Jews and would become much less friendly to Jesus’ followers. Yet, He commanded to “render to Caesar.”
We each have a duty to whatever government happens to rule over us. We have a duty to pay taxes, render respect, and even obey those things which are not counter to God’s command. Many believers have difficulty with this. But if we realize that God has ordained the government that we have, we can have a better attitude toward those who make and enforce our laws.
Pray the Word:
Ask the Lord to reveal to you any area where you might fail to “give to Caesar.” If there are any, then repent and pray for our leadership.
