Read the Word:
James 5:1-6
Meditate on the Word:
Our Lord’s brother here gives one of the strongest warnings about ill-gotten gain. Of course, we know that often, the wealthy do not rely on God, but instead rely on their wealth. We have a certain mental picture when it comes to what constitutes wealthy, and in many cases it is obvious. However, many are in much better financial shape than they appear. Those whom God has blessed are expected to be generous as he is.
James makes an interesting point in saying, “Your gold and silver are corroded, and their corrosion will be a witness to you.” James is not condemning “saving for a rainy day,” or investing, both of which are clearly mentioned in scripture. His warning is against accumulating far more that one needs and hoarding it at the expense of those who are suffering. If we truly trust in God instead of our money, we realize that He provides many of us the opportunity to be generous in his name.
Pray the Word:
Ask our Lord to guide you in your financial decisions. Do that which He reveals to you.
