Read the Word: Mark 12:1-12
Meditate on the Word:
When Jesus entered Jerusalem riding on a donkey (Mark 11:1-11), we are told that they shouted “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.” These words come from Psalm 118. It is interesting then when Jesus quotes the same psalm saying, “The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. This came about from the Lord and is wonderful in our eyes.” (Mark 12:10-11; Psalm 118:22-23)
A capstone on a wall is one placed on top to mark the successful completion of that wall. Those who were building the religious structure of Israel should have recognized Jesus as the capstone, a successful finish. Instead, they wanted to keep building their religious institution their way. They rejected the One who was to have been their “capstone.”
A cornerstone in building is the stone upon which the placement of all other stones is based. It provides structure and support. The rejected capstone, Jesus, became foundational stone for a new institution for worship of God, the Church. As hymn author Samuel John Stone famously wrote, “The Church’s one foundation is Jesus Christ her Lord.” Our brothers and sisters have been successfully building the church on the foundation of Jesus for two millennia. We must continue to do so.
Pray the Word:
Thank the Lord for your church body. Express your love of your fellow believers to the Lord.
