Read the Word:
Colossians 3:1-11
Meditate on the Word:
Paul’s admonition in verse 2 can be difficult to do in practice. We may want to keep our eyes on things above, but we are continually surrounded by the things of the earth. Now more than ever, the world has ways to continually bombard us anger, worry, fear, and idolatry in its various contemporary forms. It is easy to focus on the things of the world and to be overwhelmed by them. It is also very easy to be discipled by the things of the world and engage in its religious practices of anger, wrath, malice, and filthy language. Focusing on the things above takes time and effort on our part.
We cannot fully set our mind on things above if we continue to allow worldly voices to dominate our hearing. We must do two things successfully in order to retrain our minds to focus on the things of Christ. First, we must silence the voices of the world. Step away, at least for a time, from worldly news, entertainment, social media, and other things that serve to take our focus or fill our hearts with noise. Then, we must listen for our Lord to speak to us. We must make space for the still small voice (1 Kings 19:12). We must listen to Him and put His words to action in our lives.
Pray the Word:
Ask our Lord to reveal to you any distractions that take your focus away from Him.
