Read the Word:
Ephesians 2:8-10
Meditate on the Word:
The idea that we are saved by grace alone through faith, and not by works is important. Throughout human history, we have tried to add works, feeling that we must have some role in our salvation. But the simple fact is that we cannot add anything to our salvation. Martin Luther recognized this fact, in spite of the teaching of the Catholic Church at the time that people could pay for forgiveness through “indulgences.” On this day in 1517, Luther nailed his “95 Theses” to the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany. This would kick off the “Reformation” and lead to the formation of Protestant Churches.
As Baptists, this day is important to our history. This doctrine is important to us. As we say every Sunday, you cannot earn your salvation, but you can receive it. It’s not what we do; it’s what Christ did for us.
Pray the Word:
Thank the Lord for faithful teachers of the gospel that you have had in your life.
