Read the Word:
2 Samuel 1:4-27
Meditate on the Word:
I have always been intrigued by David’s apparent affection for King Saul. Saul held the throne that David knew he had been anointed for. Saul used David for his ability to win battles, and for his ability to calm his spirit with his music. Then, Saul tried (many times) to kill David. Yet, when David had the same opportunity, he refused. He continued to show kindness to Saul and his family even after Saul’s death. Why? Because it was the right thing to do.
This is why he could not abide the liar who claimed to kill Saul. This is why he fasted and mourned over the deaths of Saul and Jonathan. Loving those who wish to do us harm is countercultural, certainly. Some may even call it foolish. But we are commanded to do this. Christ calls us to love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us (Matthew 5:44). Why? Because that’s what He does. While we were enemies, we were reconciled to God (Romans 5:10). And we are to love each other as He has loved us.
Pray the Word:
Is there someone who has become your enemy? Pray for that person today.
