Read the Word:
Titus 1:1-9
Meditate on the Word:
As the church was growing throughout the earth, it was important that each body of believers have leaders who would keep the church faithful to Christ. In instructing Titus to establish elders or overseers in every town in Crete, Paul wrote several qualities that are absolutely required for a leader in the church. If we look at these characteristics, we notice that they are mostly characteristics that should be common among all believers in Christ.
The characteristics are almost all related to moral character, being upright and blameless, faithful to one’s spouse, not dishonest in his business dealings. In short, the primary qualification for being a leader in the church is to be of genuine Christian character. At the end of the qualities mentioned, is holding to the message as taught so that he can teach others and refute those who oppose it. If one is not truly living out the gospel, then he or she is an ineffective teacher. Not everyone is called to teach, but all Christians are called to the character of Christ. Some just have the additional responsibility of leadership.
Pray the Word:
Examine your life in terms of these characteristics. Repent of anything that falls short of God’s desire for you.
