Read the Word:
Exodus 32:1-14
Meditate on the Word:
It’s amazing how some leaders will quickly give in to popular opinion instead of holding fast to what is right! Aaron, the brother of Moses, was the second-in-command and was the one who spoke when Moses had difficulty. Like all the Israelites, he had seen God work in getting the people out of Egypt. He had witnessed the miracles that led them to where they were. Yet, when Moses was delayed coming down from the mountain, and the people asked for an idol, Aaron quickly gave it to them.
Aaron was the high priest, the religious leader of all of Israel. He knew the right thing to do, which was to wait. God was not going to carry His people out into the desert to leave them abandoned. But waiting is hard. People are impatient. Forty days (Ex. 24:18) is a long time to wait. But if Aaron had been the leader he needed to be, he would have encouraged people to continue to wait. The last thing he should have done was to give in to the impulse of the masses and helped them to commit this great sin!
Many leaders today, both secular and religious, give in to the impulses of the crowd instead of holding fast to what is right. These leaders will answer to God for their failures. One of my leaders from my active duty days used to say, “Do the right things for the right reasons and the right things will happen.” Aaron could have used that advice. So could many leaders today.
Pray the Word:
Pray for your pastor and other leaders, that they will be strengthened to do the right things.
