Read the Word:
2 Peter 2:1-3
Meditate on the Word:
I often get asked my opinion on various well-known preachers, particularly those of megachurches. Usually, this question comes because a person either (1) really likes that pastor’s preaching and wants my opinion on what they are saying, or (2) this “pastor” has said something so far out of bounds that this person immediately recognized them as a false teacher. My honest answer most of the time is that I have never listened to that particular preacher. One could make a full-time job of listening online to the teachings of various pastors to root out false ones. That is not my calling.
My calling is to teach the people of Sappony to live holy lives relying on the Holy Spirit and searching the word of God for themselves. I like the model of the Bereans who “searched the scriptures daily to find out if these thing were so.” (Acts 17:11). Those who rely on the Holy Spirit and hold tight to the teaching of scripture will not find themselves easily deceived. The Holy Spirit will raise the alarm if a teaching is false.
Apostle Peter reminds us that false teachers: those who teach heresies, those who deny Christ, those who exploit people with their greed, those who live in opposition to the gospel–these will be destroyed. In fact, “their destruction does not sleep.” The problem is that these will lead many astray. There are “preachers” leading blind sheep into hell with their false teaching. Let us be aware, but not by studying false preachers, but by studying the true Word of God.
Pray the Word:
Pray for those who are being deceived by false teachers, that they will see the light and flee from this teaching.
