Read the Word:
1 Samuel 2:18-21
Meditate on the Word:
We know from earlier in this chapter that Samuel was the son that God gave to Hannah in response to her earnest prayer. We also know that when the child was weaned, as she had promised, she gave him into the service of the Lord. In this passage, Samuel is presented as a contrast to the wicked sons of Eli, who are abusing their priestly authority. I find it interesting that Samuel is mentioned as wearing an ephod. This was the priestly garment, and he wore it with a little robe that his mother made. Apparently young Samuel was the most qualified for the office of priest at that time.
I cannot count the number of times that I have heard people say, “I’ll wait until my kids are old enough and let them decide if they want to go to church.” Instead, we should really be following the example of Samuel’s mother, recognizing that our children are given to us so that we may train them to serve God. Our children are never too young to learn about our Lord. They are never too young to be taught to serve Him. After all, they will grow up to be the next generation of believers. We should give them every advantage in that area.
Pray the Word:
Pray for your children and subsequent generations that they will be faithful and true.
