Read the Word:
John 18:1-11
Meditate on the Word:
On Sunday, we looked at Mark’s account of the arrest of Jesus. Today, looking at John’s account, we see details that Mark did not include. For instance, we see that Jesus’ power was demonstrated in the way that the soldiers fell to the ground when Jesus told them who He is. Twice this happened. John also mentions that Jesus tells the guards to “Let these men go.”
Even though it appeared as if everything was going wrong, Jesus was fully in control of the events surrounding His arrest. The soldiers would not have been able to capture Him before the appointed time. Certainly the soldiers would have seized or killed Peter for his injury of Malchus. But, this mob of those who came to arrest Him were forced to observe His power. With His words, He knocked them down. But then He allowed them up so that He could go to the cross as was the Father’s plan. We must not see Jesus as a victim in this scene. He is the conquering hero, voluntarily going to take our place. Let us remember that today.
Pray the Word:
Thank our Lord for this reminder of His power.
