Read the Word:
2 Peter 1:2-15
Meditate on the Word:
I was once in a play where it was obvious that the girl playing one of the main characters had never bothered to learn her lines and had never taken practice seriously. It was seriously embarrassing to watch and participate in the farce of a production that came out almost nothing like it was originally written. Practicing is essential for performance. It is the same with the spiritual life. When we get saved, we do not automatically just start doing the right things all the time. We have to practice the right things.
Peter notes this well, asking us to exercise goodness, knowledge, self control, and affection. We have to practice these because they are not a part of the old nature; they become part of our new nature, but we must practice them. The Christian life takes work; we cannot just phone it in. Let us think how we can better exercise these characteristics in our lives.
Pray the Word:
Ask our Lord to reveal to you those things that you have not been practicing. Commit to doing them.
