Read the Word:
Psalm 101:1-4
Meditate on the Word:
It is easy to “hate the practice of transgression” (v.3, HCSB), or the “work of them who turn aside (KJV), when the transgressions belong to others. It can be much more difficult to hate the practice of transgression when it is our own sin that is in view. But we must also hate our own wickedness and evil deeds. In fact, I would say that is even more important than hating the wickedness of others. We must join with the psalmist in declaring that the practice of transgression will not cling to us. Admittedly, this is a difficult task.
The very thing that makes sin tempting is that we usually gain some pleasure from it. Often, we can try to justify it by thinking that “nobody is being harmed,” or “nobody’s perfect,” or “I’m only human.” It is also easy to see the sins of others as much worse than our own. I recently read that cannot cast out the devil that you’re dancing with. And if you’re dancing with the devil, you will get burnt. For this reason, we must resolve to “not set anything worthless before our eyes” and to “keep a devious heart far from us.”
Pray the Word:
Make a commitment before the Lord to not waste your time with anything that is displeasing to Him.
