Read the Word:
2 Peter 3:14-18
Meditate on the Word:
I have always found it amusing in this passage where Peter discusses that Paul has also written about this same topic and says, “His letters contain some things that are hard to understand.” So much in scripture can be either hard to understand, or even more so, hard to accept. Peter recognizes that Paul has written “with the wisdom that God gave him.” But the point of mentioning Paul is not a critique on his writing, but rather to point out that “ignorant and unstable people distort” Paul’s writings as well as other scriptures. This was not only a problem in the first century; it continues in the twenty-first century as well.
We must guard against the teachings of any who would misrepresent what God teaches in His word. Sometimes, for whatever reason, we can have a difficult time understanding a particular portion of scripture. We can read and reread and still not quite bring the meaning into focus. It is important to remember that all scripture is designed to move us closer to God. We should therefore always rely on His help to communicate His word to our spirit. When we rely on Him, the truth becomes clearer. Also, false teaching and doctrine become more obvious to us.
Pray the Word:
Ask our Lord to help you understand His word today.
