Read the Word:
1 John 2:15-23
Meditate on the Word:
The early church had a problem. Gnosticism, or the idea that people were redeemed by a special secret knowledge. Those with this knowledge were superior to those without. The problem: this knowledge was a lie. Most gnostics did not believe that Christ was fully man, therefore He was incapable of suffering for our sins. They claimed knowledge that, of course, could not be verified or proven. John is basically reminding the church that they know Christ and know the truth.
Any good lie requires some truth in order to do its work of deception. After all, if it’s not believeable, nobody will believe it. But truth never relies on a lie. Truth is big and strong enough to stand on its own. Truth is knowable as well. We, as Christians, have the indwelling Holy Spirit in us so that we can discern the truth. We do not need to fall for every cleverly crafted lie. We know the truth because we know the author of truth.
Pray the Word:
Ask our Lord for wisdom to discern truth today.
