Read the Word:
James 3:13-18
Meditate on the Word:
Socrates is famously quoted as saying, “The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing.” There is a lot to be said for humility. In fact, in this passage, James reminds us of its importance. He emphasizes that wisdom will lead us to a life of good works with an attitude of humility. We serve an all-knowing and all-powerful God. We are not, ourselves, all-knowing or all-powerful. Being reminded of this is important to keep our motives right.
When we fail to maintain a humble attitude, it is easy to start feeling superior to others. Others whose experiences are different than our own. Others whose mistakes are different than our own. Others who see the world differently than we do. When we do this, we set ourselves in place as a judge over them, failing to realize that we have been deserving of the same judgment. Let us keep an attitude of humility toward God and toward others.
Pray the Word:
Ask our Lord to reveal any envy or selfish motives in your life. Repent of these.
