Read the Word:
Mark 12:13-17
Meditate on the Word:
Very often, the most important part of this passage is overlooked. It is easy to recognize, of course, that Jesus commands us to “give to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s.” What can be easier for us to overlook is Jesus’ question, “Whose image and inscription is this?” By pointing out the image on the coin, Jesus is giving these religious leaders a reminder that there is another image here which needs considered. That is the image of God in which mankind was created. This is why Jesus also commands, “Give to God the things that are God’s.” This is not primarily a financial command.
As bearers of the image of God, we are responsible to give to God what is rightly His. We are responsible to give Him our worship and praise. We are responsible to live our lives for Him. We are also responsible to recognize the image of God in others. Take some time today to think about what being made in the image of God means that we owe Him.
Pray the Word:
Ask our Lord to help you to recognize the image of God in others today.
