Read the Word:
Psalm 146:1-10
Meditate on the Word:
Today may be Halloween, but the scariest day by far for many people this year will be Tuesday when ballots are cast in our various elections. Both political camps have skillfully marketed fear to Americans in order to attempt to secure their vote. This fear-mongering rhetoric rivals any haunted house we could dream of. This is why we do well to remember that God is still on the throne.
Our psalmist today reminds us that we cannot trust in humans, who are unable to save. When they die, their plans die with them. Only God is able to save. No political candidate can save, no matter how hard anyone tries to paint them as a Christ-figure. Only God is able to save us. Not only that, God wants to save us.
Look at the groups He has concern for: the exploited, the hungry, and the prisoner (v. 7), the blind, the oppressed, the righteous (v. 8), the alien, the fatherless, and the widow (v. 9). As His people, we should share His concern for them. We should also remember that we are unable to delegate the work that God has given the church. It belongs to Him and to us, not to the government. And above all, keep in mind that our God is still on the throne, no matter what the American people may say.
Pray the Word:
If you have been tempted to trust in a political candidate instead of God, confess that to Him.
