Read the Word:
Leviticus 19:9-18
Meditate on the Word:
On Sunday, we heard Jesus’ words in Mark 12:28-34 in response to the question of the most important command of all. This was, of course, to love the Lord our God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength. But Jesus goes further. He also mentions the second command. This is, of course, to love our neighbor as ourselves. This quote also comes from the Old Testament Law. It comes after several requirements for how to treat people.
There was a program to feed the poor. Farmers were to leave some of the crop at the edge of their field for the poor to glean. You may recall that this is how Ruth fed Naomi and herself until marrying Boaz. Note that these are to be left for the “poor and the resident alien.” (v. 10). God would not have those with plenty allowing those without to starve. In this section, as well as other places in the Law, God forbids stealing, deception, oppression, withholding wages, mistreatment of the deaf or blind, prejudice, slander, revenge, and holding a grudge. These things are simply incompatible with a life that is dedicated to God.
Pray the Word:
Have you mistreated or slandered anyone? Confess this sin to God and then go and seek peace with the person you have harmed.
