Read the Word:
Hebrews 3:7-19
Meditate on the Word:
It has often been said that those who do not know their history are destined to repeat it. We have always been able to observe this phenomenon from the history books. Scripture is also filled with examples of people who did not learn. The author of Hebrews warns people against this very sort of tragedy. Specifically, he is warning them from an episode in Numbers 14 when the people of Israel refused to trust in God and enter the land. After seeing miracle after miracle (the plagues, the crossing of the Red Sea, the provision of manna, the cloud by day and pillar of fire by night), they simply refused to trust that God would give them victory against an enemy.
It can be very tempting for us as well, having experienced God moving in our lives and in the world, to still turn away from Him. It is easy to be deceived into thinking that God is withholding some sort of good from us, or that suddenly His plans are not sufficient. It is easy to despair by looking at the world around us instead of hope by keeping our eyes fixed on Him. This is why the writer of Hebrews calls us to “encourage each other daily.” We must remind each other to keep our eyes on our Lord and continue in faith each day. Otherwise we, like our ancestors, may turn from Him even after all He has done.
Pray the Word:
Ask the Lord to bring someone to mind that you should encourage today. Reach out to that person.
