Read the Word:
Judges 2:6-15
Meditate on the Word:
On Sunday, we discussed the importance of teaching the next generation about the wonderful works of God. Today’s passage gives a good example of why. In verse 10, we see that another generation grew up who did not know the works of God. Was it that their fathers failed to discuss how God had rescued them from slavery in Egypt, sustained them for forty years in the wilderness, and given them the land. Certainly this information was passed on in some households, because we have it today. But many others, I would speculate, got comfortable, complacent, even lazy. It’s easy to do.
There is a natural consequence when children grow up without the knowledge of the Lord. They forsake the Lord and worship other gods. Perhaps we are distracted by the fact that the gods Israel turned to were statues of wood and stone. Certainly, it is hard to see the appeal in that. But we were made to worship. If we fail to worship the One True God, we will worship something in His place, whether it is money, celebrities, or even ourselves and our own desires. Anything that takes God’s rightful place in our lives is an idol.
In my home growing up, God’s name was usually only mentioned in profanity. I learned about Christ from dedicated Sunday School teachers who took the time to teach me. But what if the message of Christ had been primarily taught in my home, and reinforced by Sunday School teachers and pastors? I think that I would have matured a lot more as a Christian in my youth. Parents and grandparents, you can do that for your children. Teach them about God so that they do not grow up not knowing Him.
Pray the Word:
Ask God to give you natural opportunities to talk to your children about what God has done.
