Read the Word:
Romans 8:1-8
Meditate on the Word:
I think that often, we see our salvation as freedom from the consequences of our sin. This is, at best, an incomplete view that helps to keep us focused on our sin. Instead, we should view our salvation as freedom from our sin. Not just the consequences, but the compulsion to sin. This does not mean that we’re never going to mess up; we are still human after all. What it does mean is that we no longer are required to obey the sinful desires that are inherent in us all. This, however, requires a shift in our focus.
If we are continually focused on the sinful deeds of the flesh, this increases our desire to do those things. If instead we are focused on what is pleasing to God, this increases our desire to do those things that He wants us to do. Paul reminds us in this passage that “the mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God.” If we love God, we will focus on Him, not on what He has forced us to give up to be with Him.
Pray the Word:
Ask our Lord for strength to live according to the Spirit today.
