Read the Word:
Proverbs 2:1-5
Meditate on the Word:
We have access to information that is unprecedented in the history of the world. Yet, this increase in the availability of information has not caused an increase in wisdom. Instead, the exact opposite has occurred. Information is everywhere, but wisdom is scarcely found. I believe that this section of Proverbs gives us an insight into why. Simply having knowledge available is no more use than having a garden full of produce that one does not harvest.
Note the action words that Solomon uses in this passage: accept, store up, listen, direct, call out, lift your voice, seek, and search. These are expected of the son (or daughter) who wishes to be wise. Seeking wisdom requires intentional action. In the same way that eating the produce of the garden requires planting, weeding, and harvesting, wisdom requires the actions that Solomon calls his son to do. We will not passively receive wisdom.
Many people are happy to passively accept whatever “knowledge” is tossed at them on social media, but refuse to put any time and effort into knowing the One who truly grants wisdom. Many are happy to accept whatever fits into their preconceived worldview, or whatever entertains them, without any effort. However, God requires that we put in the work to receive the understanding that He has for us. Note in verse 5 that as the result of the actions in verses 1-4, “then you will understand the fear of the Lord and discover the knowledge of God.”
Pray the Word:
Ask our God to give you understanding today.
