Read the Word:
Psalm 14:1-7
Meditate on the Word:
Many people like to operate under the mistaken belief that people are basically good. That they want to do good, and if sufficiently educated that they will do good. Many have the erroneous understanding that if someone does wrong, it’s either because they do not know better or that they have not been given the right opportunity to do better. This understanding can help us to prop up our own sense of being “good.” The major problem with this premise, however, is that “No one is good except God alone.” (Mark 10:18). We may be capable of the occasional good deed, but “there is no one who does good.” That is because the standard of “good” is out of our reach. It has been that way since the first sin in the garden.
It is much more realistic if we think of people as being basically sinful, including ourselves. Thinking of ourselves and others as “good” minimizes the need of Savior. Thinking of ourselves and others as sinful or depraved is a good way to remind ourselves that, without Jesus, we are definitely not good. Not even close. We wander. We make mistakes. We intentionally say and do things that are out of our Lord’s will. We act as if there is no God, then get upset when He does not bless us the way we want. We must remember that there is no one good except God, and that any goodness we have is a gift from Him.
Pray the Word:
Turn toward the Lord and ask Him to grant you wisdom.
