Read the Word:
2 Chronicles 34:1-7
Meditate on the Word:
I am always amused when I picture eight-year-old Josiah being crowned king. I’m sure that the people he ruled were probably less amused, having a child in charge of their taxes, their nation’s security, the politics of the day. I’m certain that like any good king, Josiah had advisors to keep him from going off the rails. The thing that Josiah is noted for, however, is for seeking God and making religious reforms. He started doing this at a very young age. At 16, he started seeking God and at 20 he started removing the idols and their symbols that his father had allowed to take over. It would still be six years before Josiah decided to restore the Temple and the book of the law was found. He was simply acting based on what he already knew.
It is, of course, easy for us to look at this portion of history and think of it as an exception. We do not think of God using young children to accomplish the work of His Kingdom, but He can and does. We can look around us and observe just how bad the world has gotten and despair for our children and grandchildren because of the conditions that they are growing up in. This is not helpful. It is certainly more helpful to remind ourselves that God created each of them, gifted each of them, and placed them at this point in human history to do His will. The best thing that we can do is to encourage them to seek Him now and follow His plan for life. They may just be the change we have been seeking.
Pray the Word:
Pray for any children in your life, that they would seek the Lord and do His will.
