Read the Word:
Jeremiah 3:1-5
Meditate on the Word:
Throughout the Old Testament prophets, Israel’s apostasy, or turning away from God, is presented as adultery and prostitution. These are God’s chosen people, whom He led from captivity into a land flowing with milk and honey, and they ignored Him and worshiped idols. While it can be easy, and tempting, to see modern nations in light of passages like this, a much more realistic comparison of Old Testament Israel is to the church. After all, we are God’s elect that He has called out of captivity and drawn to Himself. The contemporary western church, like ancient Israel, can be drawn to idols. These can be worship style, models of ministry, worldly ideologies, political alliances, and various other things.
When the church gets distracted from her focus on her groom, Christ, she is apt to fall into the same type of adultery and prostitution that led Israel into captivity. We must guard against removing our eys from Him, else we will veer off the path into the weeds and find ourselves entangled. This doesn’t necessarily happen all at once; we can find that we have gradually drifted over the course of generations. Let us keep our focus on our Lord today.
Pray the Word:
Pray for your church that she will stay faithful to Christ for generations if the Lord tarries.
