Read the Word:
Psalm 1:1-6
Meditate on the Word:
Yesterday, we observed that Matthew (Levi) gave up a lucrative career in tax collecting to follow Jesus. Then he gave a dinner where he introduced Jesus to his tax collector friends. We have to assert that this dinner was not sinful because Jesus attended. But what happened after the dinner? Matthew followed Jesus. He no longer “walked in step with the wicked” but instead delighted in the Lord.
It is entirely possible, although it’s not said, that there were some in attendance at that dinner who decided to follow Christ. Most of them in attendance likely continued in their sin. In following Jesus, it would have been utterly impossible to continue to follow the path of sinners. One simply cannot go two directions at once.
Likewise, when we give our lives to following Christ, we can no longer go the previous sinful direction we once traveled. If we delight in our Lord, we will feel out of place in the company of those who do not know Him. We feel less comfortable with activities that do no glorify our Lord. This is as it should be. The closer we draw to Christ, the further we distance ourselves from a world that mocks Him.
Pray the Word:
Ask our Lord for wisdom as you avoid the paths of sin and destruction.
