Read the Word:
James 1:2-8
Meditate on the Word:
How many of us dare to take our Lord up on His offer of wisdom? (v. 5). And when we do, do we pay close attention to the condition set forth in v. 6, that we must believe and not doubt? This sounds difficult, right? We want wisdom, or at least we think we do. But often, I think that we limit our request. We ask for wisdom for dealing with a specific situation; for the handling of a crisis or event. I know this, because I have often done this. Of course, this is not wrong in itself, but I think that this is not what our Lord intends for His people.
This verse is presented in the immediate context of perseverence in the faith. Wisdom that comes from God helps us to remain steady in Him despite living in a shaky world. If we doubt God, we are shaking along with the world. But, you may say, “I struggle with doubt.” I think that this is normal. I think that the desperate father in Mark 9, whose son had an unclean spirit, summed it up best when he said, “I do believe; help my unbelief!” (Mark 9:24).
True wisdom, if we will ask for it an accept it, is knowing and doing God’s will in each situation in our lives. We must be prepared to ask for this wisdom, fully believing that we will receive it. We must also be prepared to ask for help when our faith is weak, or tired.
Pray the Word:
Ask our Lord to give you wisdom, generously, and without fault. (James 1:5).
