Read the Word:
Amos 8:1-7
Meditate on the Word:
Our God has always cared about the plight of the poor. He especially never wanted people who had plenty to take advantage of those who did not have. Our God is generous and wants His people to be generous as well. In fact, the things that God generously provides to people are often provided through others of His people. He intends that we bless others, not that we receive blessings to hoard them.
God was especially displeased with His people being dishonest in their business dealings. Cheating, especially against the poor, was an eggregious offence. Instead of blessing those in need, dishonest people were siphoning their livelihoods from them and even enslaving them with debt. This behavior showed a lack of reverence for God and His law and a lack of concern for His people. This is not how He intends for us to live.
Pray the Word:
Ask the Lord to reveal any greed or dishonesty in your heart. If necessary, repent and change.
