Read the Word:
Hebrews 11:29-12:2
Meditate on the Word:
When you read about some of the sufferings endured by our predecessors in the faith, how does it make you feel? I think that it is easy to read these accounts and feel disconnected from them in some manner. We cannot really understand what they experienced. Then we can question, is my faith strong enough to stand trials such as this? We don’t actually want to be tested, but we want to know that we would be faithful through the test. Perhaps there is a way for us to know?
We are told to “run with endurance the race that lies before us, keeping our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of our faith.” One cannot be known for a lifetime of faithfulness unless he is faithful in each step of the race that God has given to him. We do not do well to think that we would pass a great trial of our faith if we routinely take our eyes off our Lord. We should not expect that we would remain faithful to our Lord in great suffering if we cannot remain faithful in good times. If we cannot run on flat ground, we will certainly never run up a hill! We must first pass the test of setting aside sin that snares us, then we can be certain that we would pass a larger test.
Pray the Word:
Ask our Lord for the courage to continue in your race today.
