Read the Word:
Deuteronomy 5:1-21
Meditate on the Word:
The name “Deuteronomy” means “second law.” This is the Law as repeated by Moses to the Israelites in his farewell address to them. Moses is about to die and Joshua is about to lead Israel into the promised land. This is a reiteration of what God has already commanded of them. This particular section of the Law is known as the “Ten Commandments.” We can easily see that the first four commandments concern our relationship with God and the last six concern our relationship with others. This is why it is so easy to sum up the law as Jesus did, “Listen, O Israel! The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength…Love your neighbor as yourself.” (Mark 12:29-31)
Note that the commands concerning God come first. We are not to have any other gods before Him. Don’t just read this as statues, etc. Read this as anything that we place ahead of God in our lives. This could be money, career, family, or even political affiliation. These things must not take the rightful place of God in our lives. Our God is the God who brings out of bondage. He would not have us being bound to any but Him. We must hold Him in such high esteem that we refuse to entertain anything as “more important” than Him. Idolatry always starts in the heart.
Pray the Word:
Ask the Lord to reveal to you any idols in your life. If there are any, repent.
