Read the Word:
Isaiah 59:9-15
Meditate on the Word:
It is amazing how often the Old Testament prophets sound as though they are speaking into our culture today. We know that God’s word is designed to speak to all of His people in all ages. We must also recognize, however, that it sounds so familiar because we share the same propensity to sin. To reject God and turn away from Him. To follow after idols, hoping for them to provide us the health and prosperity that we desire. Of course, these idols, whether the Baals of Israel’s time or the idol of self that is so popular today, always fail to satisfy because ultimately they cannot save us.
The people of Isaiah’s time rejected truth and chose to follow lies. People today choose the same thing. Israel plunged headlong into their own destruction, and our culture today is repeating the pattern. People are looking for satisfaction and fulfillment in places where it can never be found. They are looking for salvation in places it can never be found. Let us point them to the truth that only Jesus can save.
Pray the Word:
Ask our Lord to reveal to you any idols in your life. Repent and turn from them.
