Read the Word:
Matthew 22:41-46
Meditate on the Word:
In Sunday’s sermon, we covered Mark’s account of this event. Mark presents Jesus as speaking to the crowd, while Matthew says that Jesus asks the Pharisees the question of whose son is the Messiah. This would seem to be a difficult riddle from scripture. The religious teachers knew and taught that Messiah was to be descended from the line of David. But then how could David, in Psalm 110:1, refer to Messiah as his Lord? This is only possible because Messiah was both descended through the line of David and the Son of God. Jesus is both David’s descendant and his Lord.
Matthew begins his gospel by establishing both that Jesus was descended from the line of David and the Son of God (Matthew 1:1-25). All of Jesus’ teachings were with authority because He has all authority. All of Jesus’ miracles demonstrated His authority because He is the Son of God. He is the Lord, whether we choose to live like it or not. Of course many choose to live in defiance of the lordship of Christ. They will face their consequence. We, however, must live like He is Lord, because He is.
Pray the Word:
Acknowledge that Jesus is Lord in your prayer today. Ask Him what He would have you to do today. Then, commit to doing it.
