Read the Word:
Matthew 24:29-31
Meditate on the Word:
Matthew has an interesting inclusion in His discussion of the return of Christ, “the loud trumpet.” The slight difference may have been in the audiences to whom these two gospel writers were communicating. Mark was primarily aimed at a Gentile audience, where Matthew was writing to a Jewish audience to prove that Jesus was the Messiah. The sound of the trumpet would have been meaningful to the Jewish audience. Throughout their history, the sound of the trumpet has called God’s people together. It was the sound that signaled prompted the walls to fall in Jericho after marching around the city. The trumpet, accompanied by the breaking of jars, caused the Midianites to turn the sword on each other when God gave Gideon victory over them.
Matthew indicates that our Lord will return with the sound of a trumpet, calling God’s people together from everywhere. Our Lord, in His power, will cause the enemy to fall before Him. The final victory has already been assured. Matthew, like Mark, records that no one knows the day or hour that this will happen (Matthew 24:36). We are to anxiously await this day. It will be a glorious day indeed for God’s people. Let’s be ready.
Pray the Word:
Pray to the Lord for strength to live faithfully for Him until the time of His return.
