Read the Word:
Psalm 53:1-6
Meditate on the Word:
We want to think that people are basically good. It provides us comfort if we think that people are not basically selfish and serving their own interests. Of course, we may have a false perception of what “good” actually is. I remember often as a child being told to “be good.” What does one do to keep such a specific command? It is even harder when we read the words of Jesus in Mark 10:18, “No one is good except God alone.”
We are not “good.” We are flawed. We are human. But we were originally good. Genesis 1:31 says, “And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good.” This was after the creation of humans, but before they had sinned. Sin makes us all “not good.” And in sin, we become those who say, “there is no God.”
The thing about recognizing that we are not inherently “good” is that we then recognize our need of Jesus. If we operate under the misconception of being “good,” we never recognize the need to be saved. We begin to think that we can manufacture our own holiness through our works or behavior. We cannot. And neither can anyone else, so the ground is level at the foot of the cross. We all stand in need of a Savior. Fortunately, One has been provided.
Pray the Word:
Confess any way that you may have denied God in your thoughts and actions. Repent.
